Lower Town

At arms length of Ottawa's famous ByWard Market, the small neighbourhood of Lowertown is a quiet complement to the hectic nightlife of the market. It is bound by Rideau Street to its south, Sussex Drive to the North, King Edward and the Rideau Canal to the west, while the Rideau River and Vanier community form the eastern limitations.

Historically French Canadian and Irish, Lowertown has a sorted history, which combined with its current diverse population makes it one of Ottawa's most interesting neighbourhoods. It is currently undergoing a rapid redevelopment, transforming it from a once crime plagued and underprivileged area to an eclectic complement to the vibrant ByWard market. Its main stretch along Rideau Street is very busy and features most of its shops and services as well as a large grocery store, several restaurants, a branch of the Ottawa Public Library and an Orthodox Jewish Synagogue.

In addition, Parliament, museums, parks and the stunning Ottawa River valley are all nearby, as is the downtown core and commercial district. The Queensway, bridges to Quebec, and the University of Ottawa are all a short drive away, and are easily accessible by OC Transpo route.
