Hunt Club is a large suburban neighbourhood in the southern part of the City of Ottawa. It is south of older neighbourhoods like Alta Vista, east of the Rideau River, and north of the Airport. Its eastern border is Bank Street, although the solidity of these borders is often debated. Several neighbourhoods within the Hunt Club area have been able to establish themselves, and there is substantial overlap in many of the newer developments neighbourhood designations. The neighbourhood is named after the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club, which was first established in 1907. One of Ottawa's oldest landmarks, it is one of the National Capital Regions most prestigious private clubs. The club owned the majority of the land the neighbourhood is situated on, yet still remains a major presence and influence on the community. In 1950, the rural area was annexed to the city of Ottawa, and the National Capital Commission controversially set about establishing a major ring road, which would run through the area. The NCC greenbelt conservation area was established and added value to the neighbourhood. The NCC still owns a considerable amount of land, known as the area of Hunt Club Woods. It has slowly been sold off to developers, initiating rapid development in the 1970's. Ever since, residents and green space advocates are trying to preserve as much of the remaining open land as possible. Designed to be a suburban bedroom community, Hunt Club has remained relatively untouched by commercial space; however there are plenty of amenities nearby. South Keys shopping centre is close at hand offering a variety of big box stores, a theatre, and restaurants. Both public and Catholic schools are present, off quiet laneways and beautifully landscaped boulevards.
